I read daily newspaper and ask my young teenager children, my relative’s children and their friends they should read it too. It helps in improving their reading, vocabulary, words in their dictionary and grammar too. However my teenager while being together with their friends had a debate with me on reading today’s daily headlines or even watching them on news and stating that they are getting new words but not good words and political drama 24 x 7 on any given media does not bring interest for them to read or watch. I was speechless…. This lead me to write this open letter.
Open Letter to All Politicians and media houses. A Call for Responsibility and Integrity.
Dear Esteemed Politicians and media houses...
As public servants and leaders, media heads you hold all are our heroes. You hold a position of great responsibility, influence, and trust. You are not merely figureheads of your respective political parties and media houses but also role models for countless individuals who look up to you, including young aspirants who dream of a future in politics or media. It is with this understanding that I write to urge you to maintain higher standards of discourse, especially when making allegations, issuing bold statements, or engaging in political debates.
In recent times, the political landscape has become increasingly marred by vitriolic exchanges and personal attacks, often characterized by a lack of decorum and a disregard for the ethics of fair play. This trend is not only detrimental to the political environment but also corrosive to the very fabric of our society.
The Impact on Society and Young Aspirants
Your words and actions have far-reaching consequences. When you engage in mudslinging and below-the-belt tactics, it sends a clear message to the public—particularly the youth—that such behavior is acceptable. It erodes faith in democratic processes and dissuades capable individuals from pursuing careers in public service. Instead of fostering an environment of respectful discourse and constructive debate, it breeds cynicism, disappointment, and apathy.
Reflecting on Character
It is crucial to remember that the manner, in which you conduct yourselves, especially in the public eye, is a reflection of your character. When you resort to unfounded allegations and personal attacks, it diminishes your credibility and questions your commitment to the principles that underpin our democracy. The common person, already disillusioned by political bickering, is increasingly inclined to disengage from the electoral process, opting to withhold votes from parties that demonstrate a lack of decorum and ethical behavior.
The Path Forward
To restore faith in politics and inspire the next generation, it is imperative that you hold yourselves to higher standards. I propose the following measures:
- Commit to Civility: Ensure that all political discourse, both public and private, adheres to principles of respect and decency. Avoid personal attacks and unfounded allegations.
- Focus on Policy: Center your debates and discussions around policies, solutions, and constructive criticism rather than personal vendettas and sensationalism.
- Lead by Example: As public figures, set a positive example for your followers and aspiring politicians. Demonstrate integrity, honesty, and a commitment to the greater good.
- Educate and Mentor: Engage with young aspirants and provide them with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the political landscape ethically. Encourage them to prioritize their values and principles.
- Strengthen Accountability: Foster a culture of accountability within your parties and across the political spectrum. Hold one another responsible for actions and statements that undermine democratic values.
Conclusion
It is incumbent upon you to evoke the change we all seek in the political arena. The future of our democracy, the trust of our citizens, and the aspirations of countless young individuals depend on your commitment to responsible and principled behavior. Let us strive to create a political environment that is deserving of respect and worthy of emulation.
Yours sincerely,
